Cook County, Minnesota
Interesting Facts
Did you know that Cook
County is approximately 91% government land?
Between the State of
Minnesota, US Forest Service, Cook County, Tribal, Tax Forfeit and each city, the
State Parks, the
Boundary Waters Canoe Area and
Lake Superior, there is not much private land.
The main cause of the higher value of this area is that most of it, in its
current ownership, cannot be developed.
It's also one of the
largest and least populated counties in Minnesota
The 2000 census showed
there was 3.6 persons per mile, 1400+ square miles, only one tenth of one
percent of the
population of Minnesota lives in Cook County.
There's only one stop
light in the whole county!
Yes, there is only one stop light in a 1400+ square mile area. It is located at
the intersection of Hwy 61 and Broadway Ave in downtown Grand Marais, Minnesota.
Surrounded by very
unique territory
Two of the largest "paddle only areas" are accessed from Cook County. The [BWCAW]
Boundary
Waters Canoe area Wilderness and the
Quetico Provincial Park are managed for
paddle or no motor recreation. A large portion of Cook County is Superior
National Forest, including the BWCAW. Also the Grand Portage State Forest and
the Grand Portage Band of Chippewa comprise the eastern section.
Four State Parks
protect natural gems
From west to east along Hwy 61,
Temperance River,
Cascade River,
Judge Magney and
Grand Portage State Parks are
natural gems preserved for all of us to use and visit. All four have major river
systems flowing that terminate into Lake Superior. The first two are obvious, in
Magney the Brule [formerly and more logically the Arrowhead River] and in Grand
Portage the Pigeon River divides Minnesota and Ontario.
Cook County borders
Lake Superior for approx. 67 miles
The largest, deepest, and coldest of the Great Lakes is also the highest in
elevation. In the summer months you'll hear, " it's cooler by the lake " and in
the winter you'll hear " it's warmer by the lake. " The massive size and depth
of Lake Superior causes an inland maritime climate. It can be much warmer
in the winter and much cooler in the summer. Depending on which way the wind is
blowing...
